"Yes & No"

Fashions from 1933

(From the June 1933 Delineator)

Yes. It's true that Paris is trimming printed jacket frocks with fur, hot weather or no hot weather! They look very 'gracious-lady' and luxurious as you can well imagine...Silver fox and blue fox are the furs, if you can be that elegant; otherwise there is Belgian hare which we have to admit looks very nice too, sorry as we are for all those poor rabbits.

Yes. White pique, and more and more white
pique--nothing could be smarter. Sets of it--hat, bag and gloves--are worn with dark suits, and what those three fresh things won't do to an old suit! And everyone who owns a dark printed silk dress--and who doesn't--should have a whit pique swagger coat to wear with it. And white pique on a black chiffon evening gown, is something you have to see to believe-to believe it could be so nice!

Yes. Silk blouses are worn with linen suits. Indeed, yes. It's a bright silk blouse if it's a dark suit. And if the suit is light, then the blouse is dark--and
printed, printed silk foulard. Lots and lots of linen suits everywhere. Be sure yours is made of the new thick burlap-y linen, and in nature color if you want it to be right from every angle. We saw one in a New York shop that was too marvelous for words--natural linen with red silk blouse, polka dotted in cream. Just grand!

Yes. The pinafore frock that buttons down the back is THE tennis dress. The secret of its charm lies in the fact that, being open and wrap-around, you have room for action, yet the skirt stays slim...

Yes. Bicycles are in fashion again after all these years--the direct result of all those cruises to Bermuda where you had to ride a 'bike' or else just stay put, on a hotel veranda. So now we have to have bicycle clothes. Twin sweaters with a divided skirt that doesn't look it, or shorts-and-shirt, or slacks-and-shirt. These are the things for roller skating, too, which is also enjoying a return engagement.

No. Not just the usual white fabric glove this summer, but gloves of all sorts of queer fabric. Printed silk gloves to match your printed frock and sometimes sold with the dress! White organdy gloves to wear with your dark dress that has white organdy touches on it. White pique gloves to wear with your tailored suit. Cotton matelasse gloves. Lastex gloves. Fit? They don't have to. It's smart to wear them big.

No. The fabric hat of fashion is not what you are thinking of-not one of those mashed wool counter hats, slightly stepped-on, with a $1.95 price tag sticking to it. Instead it is a printed silk hat to match your printed silk frock. And you make it yourself--oh yes, you do--as easy as anything...Choose either the small brimmed hat or the turban. These print hats are as smart as can be with printed dresses and plain coats.

No. The draw--string neckline isn't brand new, for it's been around since last fall in a dress here and there to which no one paid much attention. But that doesn't make any difference--it's a wow neckline now. Vionnet, at her spring opening, made it a fashion of importance, and now everyone wants it in everything from jackets to evening gowns...

No. Don't get a wool jersey bathing suit-the wool suit isn't enjoying it's usual popularity. It has rivals. The rubber bathing suit and the cotton ones are making it look sick. We know you can think of dozens of reasons why a rubber suit wouldn't suit you, but even so and nevertheless! You see, they're good-looking, and so nice and cheap, and they give one quite a figure. As to the cotton suit, we just refer you again to Bette Davis' picture...and mention that they have wool jersey tights underneath.

No. The pyjama isn't out. It's still the big favorite with those who haven't the figure for it as well as those who have. But it is suffering a slight eclipse due to the popularity of shorts. 'They' are wearing shorts for beach games, for tennis, for hiking, and all such. Smartest in flannel and linen, worn with a mannish short unbuttoned at the neck a la the movies.
